Youth democracy in Umeå municipality and Cape Agulhas municipality

In Cape Agulhas, youth leadership is not being adequately developed due to a lack of knowledge on local government matters and motivation. Municipal leaders are not mitigating this adequately which can compromise the democracies of the future.

At the same time there is a lack of possibilities for young people to contribute to decisions making made by the local government in Umeå municipality. Politicians and civil servants do not have a natural arena where they can meet and discuss with young people to be able to conclude their thoughts on different topics regarding how the city should grow safe and secure.

The partners see many potential learning opportunities following their similar challenges.

In Cape Agulhas, the objectives are:

  • To have an approved integrated youth development policy endorsed by all departments in the municipality.
  • To have an effective tool set to  plan, facilitate engagements and collect appropriate data to measure and monitor outcomes of participatory processes.
