Director of Research – one year employment

Your background
We are looking for a person with documented experience of sustainable development issues. You should have a solid research background and have completed a PhD, preferably with a focus on issues concerning democracy and development at the local level. It is an advantage if you have successfully worked in international networks of researchers and practitioners.

Your tasks at ICLD
ICLD is part of the Swedish development cooperation, funded by SIDA and has its office in Visby. We work with municipal partnerships between Swedish and foreign municipalities, international training programs and a knowledge center that contributes to and monitors current research. The Knowledge Center is a support for the entire organization and contributes to ensuring the municipal partnership programs and training programs are developed with up-to-date knowledge. In collaboration with the ICLD’s Advisory Research Group, you will support, develop and follow research in the field of local democracy and sustainable development. Through its own resources, ICLD can support research in the field of ​​local democracy and your tasks include to actively develop this research. Within the framework of the employment there is also room for own research in the field.

Your qualities
We are looking for someone with the ability to motivate, create commitment and participation. To be successful in the role, you need good collaborative skills. You need to function well in a relatively small organization which requires great flexibility and collaboration with other employees, as well as the ICLD’s rich network of both researchers and practitioners. You have a proactive approach, get things done and have the ability to navigate in both national and international networks. As a person you are clear in your communication, are strategic and analytical. You are able to speak and write English and can communicate in Swedish.

Distribution of work
We offer two possibilities:

To work 100% as research director: 50% with a research project of your own linked to the ICLD’s strategic area (see appendix 1) and 50% with research administration. In this case, the workplace is Visby.

Work 50% with research administration from a distance and travel to Visby twice a month for two days, plus international travel to other seminars and meetings.
