Redan innan ett formellt samarbete mellan Vushtrri i Kosovo och Växjö inleddes fanns det band mellan städerna. Det bor runt 1 000 kosovoalbaner i Växjö och 2012 var borgmästaren från Vushtrri på besök i staden. Det var då planerna på ett gemensamt projekt föddes.
