With the aim of strengthening local democracy, increasing youth influence, and contributing to long-term democratic resilience, ICLD has approved a partnership between Berg Municipality in Sweden and the Ukrainian municipality of Krolevets.
“This is a unique opportunity for Berg to build international relationships and support Ukraine at the same time. It also strengthens our own capacity in areas like democracy, crisis preparedness and inclusion,” says Therese Kärngard (S), Chair of the Municipal Board in Berg Municipality.
The collaboration began during Almedalen (Political) week in Gotland, Swedan at one of ICLD’s events, where the Head of Business Development in Berg met the Deputy Mayor of Krolevets. Their meeting sparked ideas that quickly led to a unanimous decision by the Municipal Executive Board to apply for a partnership through ICLD.

Part of the Democratic Resilience Network
The partnership between Berg and Krolevets will join ICLD’s Democratic Resilience Network, which now includes a total of 30 Swedish and Ukrainian municipalities and regions.
“There is still strong interest among Swedish municipalities to work with their Ukrainian counterparts, and we are pleased to grant Berg and Krolevets this opportunity,” says Johan Lilja, Secretary General of ICLD. He notes that the network has nearly doubled in size over the past year.
