Regional focus: Southern Africa / South Africa
Time: January – November 2025
This SDG implementation progress report project follows up on previous ICLD research on conducting VLRs with a participatory methodology. According to this, participatory VLRs enable the process itself to contribute to democratic change and accelerate the SDG implementation.
Abstract:
There is an increasing realization that progress in cities and municipalities is key to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Studies and reviews at national and regional levels across the globe have reiterated the need for local governments to undertake SDG progress reviews to track implementation progress, identify challenges and ensure the ultimate achievement of the goals. This study attempts to fill the gap in SDG localization data through a voluntary assessment of the state of SDG progress in the Municipality of Stellenbosch within the Western Cape Province of South Africa. The results of this study are expected to help policy makers in their decision-making to accelerate SDG progress, especially in informal settlements.
