Resilient Education: Empowering Democracy Through Critical Thinking
The partnership between Lidingö and Slavuta focuses on resilient education, aiming to strengthen local democracy through critical thinking among youth. With the backdrop of war and societal challenges, the project emphasizes inclusive, accessible, and democracy-oriented education to strengthen social cohesion and long-term societal resilience.
Both municipalities focus on fostering citizen participation, particularly among secondary school students. In Lidingö, students aged 15–18 are engaged through a social science curriculum that encourages critical thinking and analysis of propaganda. In Slavuta, thousands of students have participated in activities ranging from cybersecurity initiatives to courses in media literacy and critical thinking. A notable initiative included a fall school session focused on different types of propaganda and the development of media awareness.
Teachers in both cities have also strengthened their professional capacities, supported by international networks and cooperation with local governments and civil society. They’ve received training in democratic education, addressing violence, and analyzing historical narratives—such as the myth of Soviet propaganda—to foster independent thought. A handbook on critical thinking is currently being developed in Lidingö.
The project aspires to embed its results in lasting structures, such as improved channels for youth voices in governance, a community dialogue platform, and participatory school governance. The project’s public presentations, including one at the UN association in Sweden, underline the broader interest and recognition of its relevance.
Efforts also focus on ensuring students can share their learnings beyond the project, for example at Almedalen in Visby. The partnership demonstrates that even in times of war, democracy can be nurtured—and that youth engagement is essential for sustainable peace and resilient education systems.
The partnership is part of the DR Network for Democratic Resilience.
