If local governments inform and engage citizens in the budget planning and
execution process, the local budgets will be more transparent and equitable. On the other hand, the
authorities will be accountable for the implemented projects that are in the interest of the citizens
and the local communities.

How can local governments involve citizens in the budget process?

While many local governments are looking for shiny technological innovations in the Global North that can serve as magic bullets, a group of researchers remind us that waste is already managed by millions of waste pickers. A simple step is to start with local and simple innovations that benefit the most vulnerable groups, including those living in informal neighborhoods.An ICLD funded research project on inclusive and sustainable waste governance has put forward several policy recommendations.
