Tourism development in Jinja

The project aim is to increase the tourism in Jinja. Both men and women are active in this sector, hence affected. Women often make food or handicraft and men often work as guards and drivers. Both men and women will participate in the workshops on how to develop the tourism; they will have an improved economy, access to training and having their voices heard when participating in the workshops.

Jinja has a history as an industrial town, but there was a shift in macro economic conditions in the country where by Kampala city has taken over as the industrial capital and Jinja is the second leading in the country. Tourism is a new and first sector in Jinja, but it needs to be boosted as an alternative economic locomotive for the municipality.

This project will build capacity skills in better planning and development for the growth of tourism in Jinja. Even though the group of project members is limited, all departments will be active during the visits to Jinja and the activities during the visit to Skellefteå will be well documented to allow for spreading the information.

Furnishing of Green Areas

The project is about developing skills in planning and management of green areas (including surrounding traffic situation) and improving the ways the perspective of the child is included in the planning and management.

In this process, the two partners look at the example of Ripon Garden, in Jinja, and how the planning and management of that green area can be improved. As a comparison, we look at the planning of Nordanå playground in Skellefteå.

The main activities are study visits, workshops and discussions. Expected results are improved sanitary condition and green space management of the Ripon garden as due to a remarkable reduction in the amount of litter on the ground (which will ultimately reduce the maintenance cost) which can be reached by children in a safer way. Children and other stakeholders have been involved in the planning of Ripon Garden and feeling ownership, and that tools used for involving children have been improved.

Management of Solid Waste

Both Jinja and Skellefteå have a problem with solid waste littering the streets and the overall objective of this project is to reduce the amount of solid waste littering the streets in Jinja & Skellefteå.

This will be addressed through three components:

  • comparison of rules and regulations for management of solid waste
  • the process of managing the solid waste (sorting the waste etc.).
  • sensitizing for behaviour change by the public on management of solid waste.

The main activities are study visits, discussions on possible improvements, participating in and organising awareness activities and workshops with youth, politicians and technical staff on these issues. Expected results are a reduction of costs for waste management, through better methods and procedures being implemented (in Jinja) and less litter on the streets (in Jinja & Skellefteå). Also improved awareness on waste management issues (i.e less littering) and improved methods for awareness/behaviour change are expected results.

Civil dialogue to create an attractive image of Jinja

An attractive image of a city creates many possibilities to attract residents, investments and tourists. Developing the dialogue with the residents to reach this has been identified as a key issue in the Jinja-Skellefteå partnership.

The objective of this project is that staff & politicians in JMC have the capacity in using an inclusive public participation to create an attractive image of Jinja.

That an inclusive public dialogue on Jinja, where the voices of women, youth and other vulnerable groups have been given special attention, has been carried out and that a marketing strategy on how to create an image of an attractive Jinja is in implementation will indicate upon the fulfilment of the objective.
